Step One: Clean
Each coin begins with a careful clean. We place one of our grandfather's coins in an ultrasonic cleaner that uses gentle vibrations to loosen any surface dust or residue. This helps prepare the coin for the steps that follow.
Step Two: Drill a small hole using our grandfather’s drill press
We then drill a small hole in the coin using our grandfather’s old drill press. It’s a precise step, and using his tool adds a personal touch to every piece we make.
Step Three: Polish coins
After drilling, we polish each coin by hand. This helps restore its natural shine and prepares the surface before plating begins.
Step Four: Hand plate
For this step, we partner with a Dublin based gold gilder. Each coin is hand plated in either gold or silver. This step is done slowly and with care, as we intend to keep the detail and character of the designs.
Step Five: Apply protective layer
Once plated, we add a clear protective layer. This helps keep the surface looking fresh and adds durability for everyday wear.
Step Six: Place in oven to cure and strengthen
The 'Gallaghers School of Cookery' exposes our freshly plated and protected coins to 200 degrees of dry heat. This helps the protective layer cure properly, giving it a longer-lasting, stronger finish.
Step Seven: Assemble with bail and chain
After curing, we attach a bail to the coin and thread it onto a matching chain. This is the final stage in turning the coin into a pendant, ready to be worn.
Step Eight: Pack
Finally, each pendant is carefully packed by hand into our signature Gallaghers evergreen box. We wrap them securely with a golden bow, ready to be gifted or kept.
Now you know a little bit more about your pendant. See the entire collection here.
